We are a small business on the West Cumbrian Coast realising our passion for all things fabric, both making new and mending/transforming old. Supplying both vintage and up to the minute fabrics and haberdashery to complete projects at reasonable prices we hope to regenerate the dressmaking skills of past times from the very young to those much older. Our shop embraces not only dressmaking but quilting and patchwork, soft toy making, cross stitch, bead art, diamond art, soft furnishings, spinning and any other fabric or thread related activity.

As textiles courses have overtaken basic dressmaking skills in schools, and clothes are cheap to purchase, coupled with the busy life styles of many, needlework and dressmaking have taken a back seat in society and it is our aim at Make New and Mend to show patrons the joy of sewing, both as a functional tool and a pleasant pastime which calms the mind and feeds the soul.

We run classes and workshops as standalone sessions, aimed at every level, sharing skills from machine basics to couture garment making, and also undertake repairs and alterations on request. You will always receive a warm welcome as well as a helping hand to make choices and successfully complete projects.
